Cancun with kids aged 3 to 6
Calm Caribbean water and family resorts
Cancun is one of the easiest international beach trips from the US, with direct flights and plenty of family resorts. With kids aged 3 to 6, choose a hotel on a calm stretch of beach and add one or two easy day trips.
Best time to go
December to April is usually drier and less humid. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk in late summer and fall. Seaweed, called sargassum, can be heavy on some beaches in warmer months.
Getting around
Many families stay at their resort and use taxis, hotel shuttles, or pre-booked transfers for outings. Renting a car gives more flexibility for day trips. Bring car seats, since taxis usually do not have them.
Stroller notes
Resorts are generally stroller friendly. Sand, sidewalks, and cobblestones in town are harder, so a compact stroller and a carrier are a good combination.
Toilets and changing
Resorts have good facilities. Public restrooms elsewhere can be basic, and some ask for a small tip or fee. Carry tissues and hand sanitizer.
Nap tips
Do the beach in the morning, when the sun is lower, and nap through the hottest part of the afternoon. Many resorts have shady cabanas where kids can rest.
