Gold Coast with kids aged 3 to 6

Theme parks, koalas, and patrolled beaches

The Gold Coast in Queensland packs theme parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and long patrolled beaches into one easy stretch of coast. With kids aged 3 to 6, alternate a busy park day with a slower beach or nature day.

Best time to go

The Gold Coast is warm all year. The dry season, roughly April to October, is mild and sunny. Summer is hot and humid, with storms, and Australian school holidays bring big crowds to the theme parks.

Getting around

A car is easiest for reaching the theme parks and hinterland. The G:link light rail runs along the coast between Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, and Southport. Bring or rent car seats, which Australian law requires for young children.

Stroller notes

Beachfront paths along Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are flat and stroller friendly. Theme parks rent strollers and have stroller parking. Rainforest walks in the hinterland are better with a carrier.

Toilets and changing

Patrolled beaches usually have public toilets and showers nearby. Theme parks have parent rooms with changing tables. Australian parent rooms are common in shopping centers too.

Nap tips

Do theme parks right at opening, then leave for a hotel nap. Scenic drives to the hinterland are good for car naps.

FAQ

Which Gold Coast theme park is best for preschoolers?

Sea World and Dreamworld both have areas for young children. Many families pick one, rather than trying several in a short trip.

Can kids hold koalas on the Gold Coast?

Koala holding is legal in Queensland, but sanctuaries set their own rules. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary requires holders to be at least 140 cm tall, so small children cannot hold one but can join a photo.

Are Gold Coast beaches safe?

Swim only at patrolled beaches, between the red and yellow flags, where lifeguards are watching.

Is the Gold Coast a good base for Brisbane?

Yes, Brisbane is about an hour's drive away, making it an easy day trip.
